On September 11, 2001, Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and two of the planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center, a third plane hit the Pentagon and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks resulted into extensive death and destruction where over 3,000 people have been killed.
After the planes hit the towers, Morgan Stanley security chief Rick Rescorla put into effect plans that he had developed years before. He ignored speaker announcements in the building to remain inside and began the orderly evacuation of Morgan Stanley's employees on 20 floors of WTC 2, and in WTC 5. Despite fears that the building would collapse, Rick returned to the building again, reminded everyone to "be proud to be an American," and sang "God Bless America" to help evacuees stay calm as they left the building. At 10.05am, the south tower collapsed and Rick lost his life.
