At least 12 people were killed in the rampage and 59 were wounded in Aurora, Colorado, during a jam-packed midnight premier of the new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" when 24-year-old gunman, James Holmes, wearing a gas mask set off an unknown gas and allegedly unloaded four weapons' full of ammunition firing randomly at cinema goers.
Several eyewitnesses thought the attack was a special effects installation arranged by the cinema. They thought it was a clever stunt when the gunman throw a gas canister into the air above the audience, and fumes spread through auditorium after a loud bang. Then a silhouette of a person suddenly appeared at the front of the theater near the screen, pointing a gun at the crowd.
The lone gunman shot people trying to go out the exits. He made his way up the aisle silently, firing randomly at individuals as he went, saying nothing.
The suspect entered the multiplex cinema at about 12.30am, dressed in black and wearing a flack jacket and mask and carrying a rifle and hand guns.
The number of casualties makes the incident the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Later, Holmes was arrested by Police officers near a car behind the theater.
"He did not resist, he did not put up a fight," a police spokesman Frank Fania said in relation to the suspect's apprehension.
Meanwhile, Warner Bros. quickly canceled a premiere planned for Paris and canceled press interviews in France.
